Today’s world features ultra-modern lifestyle with focus on preference for air-conditioned ambience and fast food culture marked by Coffee, Coke, Pizzas and Burgers. Unfortunately, in India the ultra-modern lifestyle is fast becoming a way of life of the rich as well as the not so well off sections of the society. There is also increase in the incidence of the so-called lifestyle diseases like Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Diabetes and Cancer.
Most disastrous trend observed in the recent times is the rise of lifestyle diseases and cancer in children. Children diagnosed of diabetes are forced to take insulin to get along with their normal lives. There is growing incidence of girls getting mature at a very tender age 8 years only. The question is, how, why and what are the causes that have lead to sudden spurt in lifestyle diseases in children and adults alike?
The reasons for our lives becoming like punctured tyres is grossly evident as artificial life style with increasing dependence on off-the-shelf and laboratory made ready-to-eat products. If our polluted environment partly contributes to ruining our health, it is the poisonous food we have been taking that has sealed our fate.
During India’s Green Revolution, the focus has been on production of rice and wheat. The major and multinational agro businesses rigorously promoted the adoption of chemical farming practices with focus on the cultivation of rice and wheat even if it meant consumption of more water (8000 lts of water to grow 1kg rice/wheat).
The fall-out unleashed by chemical farming is three-fold. First, the soil, water sources and air have turned poisonous, and the food we consume has also been poisoned leading to increase of diseases. According to World Environment Report 89.5% of the food consumed in the world has a trace of poisonous substances like arsenic, lead and mercury. This is because of excess use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in cultivation, for long.
Second, the focus on rice and wheat with utter neglect of alternative and healthy foods like millets has lead to a host of health issues. Rice and wheat are rich in carbohydrates and lack in fibre and nutrients. They contribute to sudden rise of the blood glucose level. Millets are rich in fibre, minerals and vitamins help us to be healthy. Millets crop needs far less water (300 lts to produce one kg of millets) than rice and wheat. Third, our preference for air-conditioned life and high abuse of chemical based medicine has taken us away from nature. We have now forced ourselves into our own prisons of chronic diseases and stressed lives. Today, the solution for all our health issues is assured by becoming part of nature, and changing our food preferences to healthy millets and Kashayams which include Decoctions of water and herb(s).
Becoming part of nature is not just about planting trees, but also means to reduce our carbon foot print by phasing out fossil fuels, plastics, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It also includes finding healthy and environment friendly sources of energy (sunlight, wind and water) and adapting natural farming with focus on production of fruits, vegetables and millets which are the Siri Dhanyalu or Chiru Dhanyalu, the Food of the Future.
